It dampens the shocks between the engine sprocket shaft end the primary chain that drives the clutch/transmission. Tough work for sure. The S&S compensator ramp is a direct replacement Heavy Duty upgrade for the standard ramp and offers more reliability over more kilometers / miles. It is Micro-Polished to a mirror finish; cutting friction where it counts and it keeps the drivetrain running cleaner; cooler; and quieter. Improved oil retention helps protect critical surfaces.
