Choose the suspension and its installation parts

Front fork cartridges, a rear shock and reservoir mounting hardware perform different jobs. Start with the end of the motorcycle you want to change, then match the year, fork design and existing adjustment equipment.

This all-years selection brings earlier and later Softail applications together. The shock in the film is 54000384 for the listed 2025-on applications; it does not make that part suitable for an earlier bike.

Match the rear shock to the model year

The current catalogue separates 54000384 for 2025-on Softails from 54000325 for 2018–2024 Softails. Both descriptions specify tool-free preload, compression and rebound adjustment, a 46 mm piston and serviceability through Öhlins. Preload accounts for rider, passenger and luggage weight; damping adjustments then tune the response. Choose by the exact application before comparing the shared features.

An installation kit is separate from the shock

Installation kit 54000321 is listed for 2018–2024 Softails without factory external remote preload adjustment. The 54000325 requirements call for it when the bike lacks the preload-adjuster side cover. It supplies the installation solution for that condition; it is not a second shock or an automatic requirement for every year.

Choose cartridges for the fork already fitted

Kit 45400355 is for the specified inverted forks; 45400356 is for conventional forks. Both include left and right cartridges, springs and oil, with compression adjustment on the left and rebound on the right. Installation tools are separate, and Harley-Davidson recommends dealer installation because specialist tools are required. A cartridge kit changes the internals of the existing fork; it is not a complete replacement fork assembly.

About these products

Softail Öhlins suspension: fork cartridges, rear-shock controls and fitment

The film explains how the Screamin’ Eagle suspension tuned by Öhlins can be adjusted to suit the rider, riding style and carried load. It covers two front-fork cartridge kits and the separate Remote Reservoir Rear Suspension. Although the film describes 2018-on Softail models generally, the current rear-shock listing is specifically for 2018–2024 Softail models. The exact rear shock linked here is the black 54000325; the film is not an assurance that every component fits every Softail.

The front kits replace the original internal suspension components with Öhlins double cartridges. One kit is for inverted, or upside-down, forks and the other is for conventional forks. Compression damping is controlled in the left leg and rebound damping in the right. Compression, rebound and spring preload can all be adjusted externally to tune the fork response for riding style and load. Each kit contains the left and right cartridges, springs and oil; installation tools are sold separately. The film strongly recommends installation by an authorised Harley-Davidson dealer because specialist tools are required.

The front kits identified in the source are 45400355 for inverted forks and 45400356 for conventional forks. The inverted-fork listing additionally excludes FXDR114. No verified model-specific purchase or “Show these parts” action is offered here for either cartridge kit: fork type must be established before selecting the correct version. Their full explanation remains in the film and this text, but neither is substituted for the other.

The rear unit is a monotube, remote-reservoir coil-over shock with a 46 mm piston, tuned by Screamin’ Eagle and Öhlins. Hard-anodised, precision CNC-machined components support the construction. Its high-pressure nitrogen charge is intended to resist loss of damping performance as heat builds, while the low-friction shaft and seal-head design supports smooth movement. The film presents these features as a way to improve control and comfort over uneven roads, without supplying a measured performance comparison.

The rear shock’s preload, compression and rebound adjustments require no tools. The external preload adjuster lets the rider account for a passenger or extra luggage. Compression is adjusted at the remote reservoir, while rebound damping is adjusted at the bottom of the shock body. These are separate controls: preload accommodates the load, compression controls how the shock compresses, and rebound controls how it extends again. Use the product instructions and an appropriate suspension setup for the actual load.

Models without the factory preload-adjuster side cover require the separate installation kit 54000321. Its current listing is limited to 2018–2024 Softails without factory external remote preload adjustment; it contains the side cover with preload cut-out, bracket, washer, screw and instructions. That conditional kit is not automatically included with the shock or treated here as a universal purchase. The shock box contains the rear shock and instructions. The film states that the front and rear Öhlins suspension products are serviceable and repairable by Öhlins, so they can be maintained rather than treated as sealed disposable units.
